Tascam CD-RW700 Repair
Stuck at Welcome!

Problem is with a Tascam CD-RW700 standalone pro-audio recorder. Turn on the power and the unit gets stuck at the Welcome! message on the LCD screen and you cannot even open the CD tray.

Remove the rack ears and carefully open the unit, locate the power board (right hand side when facing the unit).

The top part of the board handles audio I/O and the bottom part is the power supply to the various boards (the connectors are a good place where to check voltages).

In my case I noticed one of the capacitor (C07 – the black one) had leaked. I also decided to replace the CapXon cap (C02) since it showed a borderline ESR value.

Specs:
C02….4,700 μF(35V)
C07…10,000 μF(16V)

I replaced them with Nichicon branded caps.

Close, start and enjoy!

Note that I did check the two resistors (R72 and R73) and they were good (desolder one lead to measure the resistance). They should be 470 Ω (1/2 W).

hello, i have the exact same issue. I bought the Nichicon caps, i made sure they were the correct 16V, 10,000 uF value. they are polarized and I soldered them into place in the correct orientation. I took pictures as I went in order to check myself. I had the exact same issue of a leaky cap.
    Specs:
    C02….4,700 μF (35V) CapXon
    C07…10,000 μF (16V) YEC Brand

It did not work, I am going to try the 4700uF Capxon cap and replace this. is there anything else i can do. what voltages can i check and where ? IM ASSUMING ITS THE 120vAC SOMEWHERE NEAR THE CAPS AND RESISTORS.

    Thanks Again, Don

    Don,

For voltages, look at the board on which you just replaced the capacitors. To the left of it you will see a white connector (visible on the last image I posted). It should be written next to each pin what the expected voltage is. If I remember well some are AC, some are DC, so make sure to put your DMM in the right mode.

My Tascam CD-RW700 also had a leaky capacitor, the 10000uf 16v cap. How I found it was I turned the unit on and inserted a disc and the only obvious problem with the unit was NO DISC, even though I tried multiple pre-recorded disc. The cap was OBVIOUSLY BAD because it leaked onto the circuit board and the top was Protruding upward slightly. I also replaced the 4700uf 35v cap as well and checked the 470 ohm resistors. This however has not corrected the problem. When I insert a disc I am still getting NO DISC. Any Ideas would be appreciated. I am suspecting possibly the laser or it’s mechanisms. I used Nichicon Caps as well. Checked them with a meter before installing. PLEASE HELP and thank you.

I would suspect the laser or mechanism. I do believe (I don’t have the unit anymore) that it is a regular “computer” CD burner, so I would start there. I have never had to realign or calibrate the laser on those units, but I know there are videos on YouTube. I would try to look up CD/CD burner repair videos.

If I remember correctly there are voltage test points, so I would check those.

Good luck and sorry I can’t help you more.

    Hi eJoannes,
mine works pretty nice but the display is quite poor,
very low intensity, so when the sun is in the room i can’t barely see what’s on it.
i’ve looked at the schematics but can’t find anything usefull.
do you have any idea of what to check ?

    thanks a lot !

I would try to check various resistors. I don’t have the unit or diagram anymore, sorry I can’t help more.

I’ve always liked this unit and then I got the FROZEN AT WELCOME . So glad I came across this solution , followed the instructions and I’m back up and running. Saved me several hundred $ either getting it fixed or replacing. Thanks !

I’m dealing with this same issue on my Teac CR-H500NT. Do you recommend the same fix for this? It’s an older model from 2009 era. Thank you for your response! It’s 2020 – Mary

I would recommend opening the unit and checking the capacitors (ESR measurements) before replacing them blindly.

I have similar problem. Unit stuck on Toc Reading and it sounds like the CD tray is trying to open. My biggest problem is I am NOT TECH savvy! Would any one of you know where can I find service to repair this unit?
    Much appreciate any suggestions.
    Thank you.

I would try to find some electronics repair places (TVs, …). One place I would try to find them is go to YouTube and search for electronics repair, TV repair, … and try to contact the business to see if they would look at your unit. Good luck!

Thanks. I’ll be sure to look into it. Since after I post my comment, the display is stuck on “Welcome”. Same problem as listed above.
Thanks again for the suggestion. Much appreciated.

I was wondering if there is a DIMMER for the display. Seems I remember one on the remote only. Alas, I have no remote at the moment. Is there a different way to dim the display? Thanks.

I do not have the unit, but I do not believe there was a way for the user to dim to display. If you can find the schematics, it is possible that replacing a resistor would change the brightness. Or you could put gels in front of it, or maybe a neutral density filter.
